The area was under the control of the Moors during the Islamic period of Portugal's history before it was stormed by the legendary Portuguese warrior Geraldo Sem Pavor (Gerald the Fearless) in 1167. This was part of the campaign that also saw the capture of the Castle of Evoramonte (Castelo de Evoramonte).
It was then given to the Knights Templar and later the Order of Christ to garrison. The castle became one of a series of forts kept by King Dinis (1261-1325) to protect the border with Castile.

It has been a long wait with focus and patience after giving up all our possessions which included a years worth of creative work to move to the Netherlands in 2019. Then finding out I wouldn’t be able to work there as a trailing spouse for over 2 years. Next, with the onset of the pandemic shutting down the options, and an acceptance into an international show in Venice, Italy this was a hard pill to swallow. And finally having to make a choice to stay or leave The Netherlands for something more our style in Portugal, this next step forward means a lot. It’s been a few years since I have had the opportunity to display art in a gallery, fair, or expo and excited to be a part of this event in February 2023.

The Lusitano is a Portuguese horse breed. Horses were known to be present on the Iberian Peninsula as far back as 20,000 BC, and by 800 BC the region was renowned for its war horses. The fame of the horses from Lusitania goes back to the Roman Age.
